Kate, Rachel, Rose and Claire are students at a private school on Roosevelt Island, New York City. One morning, the girls wake up feeling uneasy and unwell and unable to recall anything from the night before. They get even more anxious when they find out a classmate has been found dead.

Drawn together by mysterious butterflies, the four girls meet Lula and her partner JC who tell them they are already dead and their real bodies have been switched with false ones. Lula reveals she is an Animus and the girls must work for her to return to their real bodies and their normal lives.

Summoned on certain nights, the four are to eliminate monsters masquerading as humans. And after each fight, the girls are drained and exhausted. However, they have to stay focused or risk failure and die for real.
